Sciatica Q & A

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is a common problem with pain from the sciatic nerve that affects millions of men and women in the US. Sciatica typically is classified by pain that starts in the lower back then stretches to the abdomen and down one or both legs. Frequency and severity of pain varies from person to person.

What causes sciatica?

Sciatica is caused by pain from the sciatic nerve when a misaligned vertebrae in the spine occurs. Sciatica is a symptom of other conditions and is frequently felt when you experience muscle spasms in the abdomen, general aging, spinal stenosis, or a slipped disc in the spine.

When something like this happens, the sciatic nerve root is compressed and that compression causes the pain.  The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in your body, running from your back to your feet, so the pain may spread from your back to your feet on one or both sides of the body.

How do I know if I have sciatica?

If you have sciatica, likely you’re in serious pain. You also may experience burning, tingling, or numbness in the back or legs.  Diabetes and obesity also can increase your risk of nerve damage or spinal stress leading to sciatic nerve pain.

How does the provider treat sciatica?

A chiropractor at Whole Body Healthcare makes chiropractic adjustments to realign the spine and vertebrae, taking the pressure off of the sciatic nerve. Several treatments or adjustments with the chiropractor are likely needed.  More appointments may be needed based on the severity and length of time that the pain has persisted.

Once the pressure is released, the pain relief can be instant and the body begins a natural healing process immediately.

While adjustments are the most common treatment method used, the doctors at Whole Body Healthcare may suggest other natural treatments. These treatments may include the use of ultrasound or ice and heat therapy. Most importantly, having a chiropractor treat sciatic pain offers a treatment plan without drugs and without invasive surgery.
